May yours be a happy, healthy New Year.

The bright sky and warming sun combine to create a refuge from the little rain and hard cold we have had thus far.  In the courtyard, faces are turned toward the sun even as folks look to each other for conversation and renewal of acquaintances.  Yes, it seems that a few here are people I used to see on a regular basis and who are returned for whatever reason.  Welcome: it’s good to see you.

So it goes: people come and people go, and the work goes on…breakfast, cleanup; lunch, cleanup; close down for the day and clean up; relax awhile and for the night, and start again.  It’s an interesting rhythm, and it keeps the whole work flowing.  It takes a lot of people, and we are grateful for the assistance of so many.  There are spots nearly anyone can fill, and there are spots almost no one can fill: it’s that kind of situation.  It works, and the friendships which are forged over the work help make the work lighter, not the drudgery one might think it could be.

The taking care of each other which occurs within our guests is always rewarding, and the concern expressed is heartfelt.  In this season of giving, often all one has to offer is one’s self.  What better gift?  Guest-to-guest, guest-to-staff, staff-to-guest: it all comes around, freely.  This nourishes us all.

May yours be a happy, healthy New Year.
