A Prayer for our Ministry

Gracious God, you have given us this ministry and in it we have found our life in service.  Please bless all those who come to us for help — the lonely, lost, homeless, addicted, mentally ill, impoverished — the veteran, parolee, unemployed, and underemployed. May they discover hope, justice, and new life.

Bless the students, churches, and individuals who come here to volunteer. May they discover that in your service is perfect freedom.

Help us to keep going as long as there are people in need. Sustain us with the support we need to serve and help us to be good stewards of the gifts we are given for this work.

We pray in the name of Jesus, our risen Lord.       Amen.

Easter 2018

Dear Members and Friends of First United Methodist Church:

Blessings to you as we journey through Holy Week toward the great Easter celebration! At First UMC we have learned a great deal about pain and suffering and about the incredible joy of new life. Every day, we serve those who have lost just about everything and struggle with poverty, homelessness, hunger, addiction, and mental illness. But thanks be to God, we also are privileged to witness resurrection and new life! People are getting housing, employment, sobriety, recovery, treatment, faith, and friendship. These things often lead to a profound and very real experience of hope – new life – Easter!

I believe that in this ministry, First UMC has discovered its purpose. Jesus’ teaching about losing your life in order to save your life, is very real. We have found our life in service to the poor. We have saved our church by using our building and money in love and service.

Our challenge now is that we spend more money almost every month than we receive and
we are running out. Our building has deferred maintenance because we serve hundreds of people a month. We have been faithful to the gospel of Jesus Christ who began his ministry by reading from the Prophet Isaiah,

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because…
the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to liberate the oppressed, and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

Brothers and sisters, in the spirit of the risen Christ, now is the time to live out this ministry. We are Easter people! We believe in new life, healing, resurrection! Would you give First UMC an extra Easter gift this week? Would you tell a friend or family member what we do and if it seems appropriate, invite them to make a contribution. Finally, would you pray for our ministry and for our financial stability. Thank you.

Easter Blessings,

Pastor Steve
